My new favourite writer on monetary issues within American government, Rodger Malcolm Mitchell, posted today about a UNIVERSAL BASIC INCOME (UBI) in the United States of America, otherwise known (in Canada, at least) as a Guaranteed Minimum Income (GMI). This is an idea I first came across in the 1980’s. I was in favour of it then, and I am in favour of it now.
The idea of a GMI is to help all people live above the poverty level. Poverty leads to many social ills, and costs society much more than it ever could cost to ensure no one goes without the basic needs of life, healthy food, safe shelter, and whatever healthcare is needed to give everyone a fair chance at succeeding in life despite their circumstances at birth.
